Lomond School is a unique co-educational boarding school located in the west of Scotland. It was founded in 1845. Those who attend the Lomond School for the first time are always surprised to find such a business-like, high-class school in the quiet, tree-lined streets of the residential town of Helensburg.

The school has 60 study places with full board - some students will complete the entire course of study here, and for some, studying at the school will be only part of their learning experience. The flexibility of the programs allows you to prepare a learning option that is suitable for each student or student studying in Lomond.

The task of the school is for the child to gain knowledge, developing as a person and acquiring communication skills. Lomond School primarily prepares children for life beyond the school's doorstep.

Lomond School is a small school and this has its own advantage: teachers know each student, his strengths and weaknesses, which allows you to support and guide students, helping them grow and develop.

The school has 510 students.

DIRECTOR (stand 2023)

  • The ratio of teachers and students: 1: 8.
  • Each student is monitored regularly for his / her attitude to work, and staff regularly meets to discuss each individual’s progress.
  • The potential of each student is measured and his or her effectiveness is monitored to ensure that young people achieve what they can achieve. This is reflected in the excellent exam results.

PROGRAM

For students wishing to enter the Lomond School and take exams here, the Scottish education system provides significant flexibility, and it is highly valued when entering universities, both in the UK and abroad.

Senior 1 and Senior 2

During these years, students’ study in a wide program that includes various academic disciplines. The task is to obtain a large amount of knowledge and skills, as well as the development of curiosity and interest in learning.

Senior 3 and Senior 4

Students typically study in eight academic subjects from areas of interest to them. The school encourages students to choose subjects from a wide range of disciplines in order to have more opportunities when choosing further education and career.

In addition to this, students are taught the basics of physical development, religious knowledge, as well as personal development and social adaptation. If a young man needs help in developing language skills in English, the school often reduces the number of academic subjects for him so that he has time for classes with an English teacher as an additional subject.

At the end of Senior 4, students take exams in all eight subjects and are assessed using the National 5 exam system, which is the equivalent of the British GCSE system.

Senior 5 and Senior 6

The last two years of high school in Scotland are called Senior 5 and Senior 6 (equivalent to grades 11/12 or Lower and Upper on a six-year system).

In Senior 5, students’ study five subjects. If the student is fluent in English and does well in academic subjects, this level usually corresponds to the Scottish qualification Higher. Higher is qualified to study at a university in Scotland. A student with 5 Higher grades in the Higher system is admitted to most university majors.

In addition, the Scottish system allows you to get a mixed qualification and, therefore, if a student needs more time to develop language skills or improve knowledge in any subject, then he can prepare according to a mixed program combining Higher and National 5 qualifications (equivalent to GCSE) .

In Senior 6, students usually study from 3 to 5 subjects, there is also the possibility of combining with Higher or Advanced Higher. Advanced Higher is the equivalent of an A2-level exam or an International Baccalaureate to prepare for university admission. Advanced Higher is highly regarded for admission to universities in England and provides excellent preparation for higher education.

Key Benefits of Scottish Academic Qualifications

  • Students have the possibility of widespread education (at least 5 different subjects), which also exists when studying under the International Baccalaureate program to prepare for admission to a university, but at the same time they are not limited to six subjects, like in MB. Under the Scottish system, a student does not need to learn a language or science.
  • Students can earn a portfolio of qualifications for admission to the university in one or two years. They are not required to study the same subjects for two years, as is done on the A-level system.
  • The flexibility of Scottish academic qualifications is ideal for a student who needs to develop language skills in English along with academic subjects.
