Marlborough College is one of the most prestigious boarding schools in the UK. It was founded in 1843 with the support of the Archbishop of Canterbury. The campus is located an hour's drive from London, in the beautiful historic town of Marlborough.

The school is a short walk from the main street of the city, where students will find everything they may need, including clothing stores, cafes and supermarkets. Marlborough has one of the widest central streets in the UK, famous for its charismatic Tudor buildings and luxurious shops. The city has a safe and friendly environment.

The Summer School of English Language and Culture (Marlborough College School of English and Culture) combines a unique educational program with interesting activities aimed at the creative and intellectual growth of children.

Summer school is:

  • 3 hours of vibrant academic study each morning
  • A variety of entertainment, creative and educational activities in the afternoon with British teens
  • Cultural and creative excursions and evening and weekend activities

One of the fantastic aspects of the course is that in the afternoon, on the activity program, foreign students’ study in groups with British children! This is a fantastic opportunity to meet new friends, learn about British culture from your peers and, of course, practice and improve your English.

KEY FACTORS

  • In summer school, only 20% are foreign students, and 80% are British.
  • All teachers are qualified in teaching English and strive to provide students with rich cultural and educational experience.
  • Teamwork is a key element in all aspects of the program. Children will collaborate with others both in the educational process and in all other areas, developing skills that are vital in their school life and future career.
  • Marlboro - an ideal place for the development of independence of the child. One of the biggest barriers to independence is the confidence that the school helps develop during the course.

EQUIPMENT

In the centre of the school there is a dining room, a chapel, several houses for living, located around an attractive lawn. The rest of the school is an extensive campus with sports fields, trout ponds, a forest, theatres and classes.

Marlborough College has great facilities: a modern 25-meter indoor pool, which is available to students every weekday afternoon. The staff will help organize a water polo game for those who love water but are not keen on swimming in length.

The college is an excellent sports complex. There are indoor cricket nets and equipment for various sports, including tennis, netball, basketball, volleyball and badminton. Students' homes have football, tennis and basketball courts that children can use in their free time.

Filmmaking has been a popular complementary summer school course since its inception. Students who choose this course will edit their creations using the Apple Mac Suite equipment in the information technology department. Students will have the opportunity to climb the walls of the college climbing wall. The school has three specially equipped theatres and concert halls, where invited guests perform.

PROGRAM

Open Minds

This is an intellectually demanding course. Suitable for children with a high level of English and for native speakers. There is no special language training in this course. However, the lesson format will provide an excellent opportunity for non-native speakers to improve their language skills through discussion, debate and reading. The program is complemented by lectures, performances and seminars by guest speakers, which are held in the evenings and at weekends throughout the course.

The Open Minds course will be of particular interest to international students who wish to start their studies at a British private school or university. It includes a pre-school assignment and a Skype interview to assess whether the child is suitable for the program.

The course will help develop an incredibly wide range of academic skills: critical thinking, research and analysis, project development and management, the ability to work honestly and openly with others.

Classes are held in classes of a maximum of 12 people. Some classes will take place in large groups, where there is an opportunity to come together to interact with the energy and experience of the group.

This course is available for both 2 weeks and 4 weeks. In 2022, the general theme of the program is “Silence and Noise”.

In the first two weeks children will study the topic “Perception of the world: connections and contact between people.”

The guys will be asked to review how we listen and understand each other, and answer the questions: can there be power alone? What can human communication teach us? A series of lessons will lead to a joint study of how we form relationships with others and how these relationships can enrich our understanding of the world.

By the end of the course, students complete a team project, which can be presented in various forms: performance, installation, newspaper, creative work, or something else.

In the second two weeks children will learn another topic: "Search for a signal in noise." They explore how film and moving images enhance or drown out various voices, identities, and perspectives. They will study sustainable clichés in the films and media that we consume and try to understand the forces behind them.

Students will play with film technicians, questioning our acceptance of what we see on the screen. The guys will answer the questions: what is the destructive power of the film? Can we hear through this cacophony?

The course will ask students to challenge their relationships with the media and explore how the diversity of individual experiences affects how we want others to see us.

Students will work together to create a film in small groups, playing with sound, visual effects, and editing methods.

ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD

The summer school uses two houses for students of Marlborough College - Littlefield and Preshute. They are within walking distance of the central campus. Each house has its own garden, extensive open spaces with football fields and tennis courts. Remoteness from the main campus and rural conditions allow students to form a strong sense of community.

The school offers two accommodation options: single and double. All rooms are very pleasant and comfortable. If the student wants to live in a double room, the school selects a neighbour so that he is the same gender and age (not older than and not younger than the student for more than a year).

All houses are equipped with a kitchenette, a meeting area, a games room and a TV. Many of the evening events, such as talent shows, dances, or games, take place in homes.

The school has excellent nutrition that can satisfy the most demanding tastes and dietary requirements. All meals are served at Norwood Hall, the main dining room. There is a separate diet for children with allergies and food intolerances or having other dietary restrictions. In addition to breakfast, lunch and dinner, the school offers two breaks with tea and coffee: from 11:00 to 11:15 in the morning and from 16:30 to 17:00 in the evening.

And also: drawing, photography, climbing, baking, creative writing, street dancing, yogi and meditation, sports tournaments.
