Answers to questions about boarding schools

1. Where will the child live? With a host family?
The child will live in a boarding school.

2. Can the child choose their own subjects to study?
Yes, the older the child, the more choices he has. There are a number of required subjects.

3. How can a child go to university?
The boarding school takes care of the entire process of admitting a child to university: several universities or faculties are selected together with a coordinator and tutor, and the application is submitted six months or earlier. At the time of receiving the final exam results, the child knows where he has entered.

4. Can a mother live with her child at school? She can cook for him.
No, mom cannot live at school. But he may live nearby. However, she still won't be able to cook for him during the week, only on the weekends if she wants to pick him up.

5. They say a child can be beaten if he behaves badly?
Corporal punishment is prohibited by law in British schools.

6. Can my daughter go to Eton School?
Eton is a school for boys.

7. My daughter is finishing 9th grade. What does it take for her to get into Oxford or Cambridge?
Getting into these universities requires an outstanding final exam record. Preparation for these universities begins at the age of 10, at the latest at 13. However, if there are outstanding abilities and talents, as well as a high level of English, the child can enroll in a two-year program leading to A-levels, Cambridge pre-U or I.B. Having passed all exams with the highest score, he will be invited for an interview at the chosen university, and after which, perhaps, he will become a student at one of these universities.

8. My daughter studies at a Russian school. He wants to become a doctor and gain a foothold abroad in the future. What do you advise?
Definite recommendation – an English boarding school, where there is a pre-med orientation, which gives the opportunity to attend practical classes in hospitals, connections with medical faculties of universities, or statistics of successful admission of school graduates to medical faculties for several years. Only the most talented students are admitted to the medical, dental and veterinary faculties. The least thorny path is offered by the UK, in Canada only a handful of places are available to foreigners, in the USA the admission process is complicated (4 years pre-med + 4 years medical school), in Switzerland only citizens of this country are accepted.

9. The son wants to become a manager/businessman. Studying in 11th grade. What can you offer us?
Graduate School of Management in the field of management and business administration - one of the higher schools in Switzerland that teaches in English.
You can also enroll in the foundation program UK, lasting 1 year, to prepare for entering a university in this specialty.

10. My son does poorly in Russian school and is a professional athlete. He doesn’t want to connect his future with big sports. Now in 9th grade. What to do?
We recommend the UK. You can choose schools with strong sports (depending on the type of sport the child is involved in) and a professional system for helping children who are lagging behind. As a result, the son will maintain his passion at a professional level and at the same time receive high academic knowledge that will allow him to enter a good university. In addition, Britain provides the opportunity to enter the major leagues, and for special success in sports you can receive a scholarship to study at a British or American university.

11. We are considering getting a higher education; we need a “price/quality” option to stay abroad. What can you recommend?
We recommend Canada. Studying here is cheaper than in the US or UK, and flying is closer than to Australia. After studying for three years, the graduate receives a guaranteed work visa with the opportunity to apply for a residence permit on the first working day.
You can enroll in a medical specialty in the UK, it will be more expensive, but employment is almost guaranteed, because in the UK, Ireland and, more recently, Germany, there is a shortage of doctors.

Dutch education is also quite inexpensive. You can study German in Germany, French in France, German or French in Switzerland for almost free. There are also many master's programs taught in English in Germany.
You can also stay in the UK: modern rules give yougraduates have the right to stay in the country for 2 years after graduation and look for work. The employment procedure is also simplified.

12. My son wants to become an architect. Now he is in 8th grade. What can you recommend?
Send your child to boarding school as early as possible so that there are more opportunities for developing talents. The greatest opportunities are provided by the UK, with its technological design workshops, where children themselves create models of stadiums, guitars, cars, mini-planes, etc. Art studios often occupy spacious 2-3-storey premises.

13. My son is 10 years old. What is important in a future school is: comfort, excellent connections and subsequently admission to a German university. What can you offer us?
Swiss schools offer comfort. You need to choose a school in the German part of the country and a German curriculum.

14. Our son is in 11th grade, we want to enter the top best universities in the world. What can you recommend?

If your child has outstanding academic skills and a good command of English, you can try to enroll in one of the top preparatory colleges in the UK. Our university expert, LCE MSc, will discuss your country options with you.
One of the options is Canada: after a year and a half of studying at school Braemar College  You can try to enroll in the University of Toronto and a number of other prestigious universities.

15. I want to send my son to boarding school. But he is absolutely dependent. What should I do?
This is why the child should be sent to a boarding school – for the development of independence. The most important thing – choose the right school for your child – small in number, with a family atmosphere, with a “caring” boarding house and its employees. The choice of school will also depend on the age of the child.

16. I heard that in British boarding schools it is too easy for Russian children to study after our school. Will the child fall behind his peers?
Indeed, children aged 12-13 years in English schools do not learn the amount of information that is taught to them in Russia. The British system is focused on the development of thinking, the teacher helps the student independently come to certain conclusions. There is a lot involved in learning logical thinking, it is not just passing paragraphs or memorizing formulas and theorems. The reality is that not many Russian children achieve top maths grades in British schools. We strongly recommend that parents do not draw premature conclusions. It is necessary to wait for the first progress reports, which often contradict the child’s statements about “ease of learning.”

17. I heard that British schools are very sports, and our daughter is creative, she categorically does not like sports. What can you recommend to us?
English schools really pay a lot of attention to sports. This is not just teaching a healthy lifestyle, it is a way of education: if you lose, you should not break your tennis racket and freak out, but calmly shake your opponent’s hand. If you win, you shouldn’t run around shouting “I’m the best.” You must be humble. Sport teaches socialization, teamwork for a common result and discipline. The schools offer up to 80 sports, and the coaches are very kind and polite.
However, the daughter may not play sports outside of physical education lessons, and from the age of 16 in many British schools there are no compulsory group sports games, only fitness.

18. The daughter is engaged in ceramics, painting, and graphics. He plans to connect his future with art. Will she lose her artistic skills while studying at a British boarding school?
On the contrary! Not only will it not lose, but it will also bring it to the level of professionalism. British schools have fantastic fine arts, art, textile and design departments. Students create works of art that subsequently participate in major exhibitions and international competitions. They are taught to compare their technique with the style of other artists, to feel their place in the world, to be able to describe how this or that idea arose in their brain, how they imagine its implementation. They learn to combine several techniques, write a magazine, design sets for school-wide performances, which are judged by professionals from London. Visit famous art galleries.

19. What boarding schools can be recommended for a teenage daughter, so that she is not distracted by the opposite sex, but learns?
The ideal solution is a boarding school for girls. Here, the child will truly discover a whole world for himself by joining interest clubs, playing sports, and starting to prepare for various activities.about this kind of competition. The absence of the opposite sex allows a girl not to be embarrassed, not to think about her appearance, and not to be afraid of making mistakes or being ridiculed. At the same time, meetings are periodically organized with boys from neighboring respectable schools, and both entertainment events and scientific lectures are held.
