TASIS, an American school in Switzerland, was founded in 1956 as the first American boarding school. The American TASIS school in Switzerland is located on the hillside of Montagnola, a short drive from Lugano.

Lugano is a city in the Swiss Italian-speaking canton of Ticino. The city is famous for its medical, commercial and banking services, as well as the security and stability that distinguish Switzerland. Lugano is a cosmopolitan city with historic charm: wide squares, cobbled streets, sidewalks, cafes, restaurants, jewellery stores, fashion boutiques and local food shops. The school offers spectacular views of Lake Lugano and the surrounding mountains.

EQUIPMENT

The main building is located in a building of the XVII century. Villa de Nobili was once the residence of the Italian ambassador. The 14 campus buildings are well equipped and equipped. In the training blocks there is a computer, special equipment (in laboratories), interactive whiteboards (in lecture halls). On the territory there is also a swimming pool, a sports complex, many playgrounds and fields. For the creative development of students, separate classrooms and blocks are equipped. These include a theatre studio, music room, and architectural class.

PROGRAM FOR CHILDREN (7-10 YEARS)

Children of 4.5 - 6 years old are offered full-time education, and 6-10 years old can choose to live in the residence of the school or with parents.

Language classes

The school offers instruction in English, French, Italian in a warm, safe, caring environment.

The program helps children develop independence and self-confidence. Through creative activities, excursions, sports, the school introduces children to a foreign language, setting up for a positive relationship.

In the morning or afternoon, in a group of 4-5 people, children learn the language through songs, fairy tales, and theatre. Such activities stimulate children's imagination, develop their self-confidence. At the end of the program, the school invites parents to look at the performances that children are happy with.

Instead of learning the language, children can choose a new course called Science and Technology, which uses science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics to develop students' critical thinking and knowledge of the world.

Sport

After lunch, students take part in a sports program.

  • Tennis. The tennis club is for students who want to improve their skills. Children must bring their own racquet. The ratio of trainers to students is 1:6, maximum 16 people per group. Classes are held 2 times a week. Cost CHF 350-400.
  • Milan Football Camp: an intensive program led by the coach of the renewed Milan club. This is a unique opportunity to learn at the highest level from the best trainers. Classes are held 2 times a week. Cost CHF 400-500.
  • Riding on a SUP board. Classes are held 2 times a week. Cost CHF 200-300.
  • Horseback riding. Children will learn how to care for horses and practice horse riding. Suitable for beginner riders and those who want to learn more about horses. Maximum 16 people per group. Classes are held 2 times a week. Cost CHF 300-400.

Additional classes

  • Science course STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics). Students learn fundamental principles of mathematics and science through design activities and hands-on activities. The STEAM course is designed for semi-fluent and native English speakers who want to strengthen their critical thinking and communication skills.
  • Performing arts. The school's talented team prepares children to perform the musical and teaches them singing, dance, art, theater, percussion and even the ukulele! Children learn songs in English, French and Italian and show off all their new talents at the Summer Arts Festival at the end of each session.
  • Art. Special art classes allow children to express their creativity through a variety of media, from painting to photography to ceramics. Projects are displayed in a fine art exhibition during the last week of each session.
  • Robotics. Once a week, students visit the state-of-the-art Campo Science Center to learn the principles of robotics. Each class is designed to help them develop a passion for programming, problem solving, engineering, and creativity. Working with their peers and teacher, children learn engineering concepts through teamwork, construction, and imagination.

After dinner, counselors lead the children in activities that focus on teamwork and friendship. Favorite events include a luau and dance, a scavenger hunt across campus, the Ultimate Dance Off, a Harry Potter night, a game of Capture the Flag, and a Carnivale put on by the Middle School Program.

On Saturdays, boarding students take part in a number of exciting weekend clubs that are designed to teach children new skills in small groups. Recent activities have included paddleboarding, French cooking, landscape watercolor painting, hiking, and puppet-making.

Program for teens (11-13 years old)

Morning classes

Students choose a course for basic training, which they devote 4 hours in the morning 5 days a week. The choice is offered:

  • English as a Foreign Language (ESL): the ability to significantly improve your knowledge of the language under the guidance of experienced teachers. Children are completely immersed in the language environment, and in addition to the lessons, they actively practice English on activism, excursions, in the process of communicating with peers.
  • Writing skills development (English program): for children with a high level of knowledge of the language. Students improve their writing skills by learning how to structure and write essays, scientific papers, and compelling texts.
  • Italian for beginners: Ticino, Switzerland's only Italian canton, is an ideal medium for learning spoken Italian. Pupils consolidate classroom instruction with trips throughout the Ticino region and Italy.
  • French: children learn from native speakers to help them gain confidence in their knowledge. Optionally, trips to the French-speaking part of Switzerland, giving the opportunity to use the language in real conditions of communication.
  • Musical theatre: students improve their acting, singing and dancing skills, working with professional performers from New York, London, Los Angeles. Children will also learn about production of productions, including set design, costumes and process control. The group performs a musical on the last evening of each session.
  • Digital Photography: A course for children interested in photography who want to do their best work. An experienced photographer works with students. The program focuses on the features of the camera, composition, lighting technology and image processing. Children take part in trips to scenic spots around Ticino. Cameras for training are provided.

Sport

Twice a week after lunch, students take part in a sports program. Classes are held after lunch and are available at an additional cost. All equipment for classes is provided.

  • Golf. The classes are designed for young golfers who are looking to improve their game. Students practice their skills on the driving range and at the nearby Lugano Golf Club. Equipment can be provided if necessary. Maximum 5 people per group. Classes are held 2 times a week. Cost CHF 800-1000.
  • Milan Football Camp: an intensive program led by the coach of the renewed Milan club. This is a unique opportunity to learn at the highest level from the best trainers. Classes are held 2 times a week. Cost CHF 530-630.
  • Sailing. Children will learn the basics of sailing, such as how to rig a boat, how to sail upwind and downwind, and how to make turns and turns. They will also learn about water safety and how to be a responsible boat captain. As they progress, they can learn more advanced skills such as racing, cruising, and navigation. Classes are held 2 times a week. Cost CHF 250-300.
  • Water skiing. Children will learn the basics of water skiing: how to get on the skis, how to maintain balance and how to turn. They also learn about water safety and how to be a responsible boat passenger. As they progress, they can master more complex skills such as slalom, jumps and ski tricks. Classes are held 2 times a week. Cost CHF 450-500.

PROGRAM FOR TEENAGERS (14-18 YEARS)

  • Preparation for IB: The course introduces students to the requirements of the International Baccalaureate program. The training focuses on 3 components of the program and develops students' research, presentation and academic writing skills. Children learn to set real goals and competently manage their time. Learning requires at least an average level of English.
  • Own start-up: students will learn the basic principles of a start-up, learn how digital innovation has dramatically changed how an entrepreneur should start building a new business, and learn what skills are most important in the business world in the modern world. Ultimately, students will develop their own ideas in a start-up.
  • Musical theatre: students improve their acting, singing and dancing skills, working with professional performers from New York, London, Los Angeles. The group performs a musical on the last evening of each session.
  • Digital photography: a course for children interested in photography who want to take their photo work to the next level. The basis of the course is the study of the technical and aesthetic properties of digital photography with an emphasis on the use of a digital camera as a tool for photographic expression. Students will learn basic photo-processing skills in Adobe Lightroom. Children take part in trips to scenic spots around Ticino.
  • Architecture and design: training takes place in a purpose-built architectural studio on the school campus. Class work includes studying the classical architecture of the 19th century, sketching from slides and creating several models that will be presented at the Summer Festival of Arts. Over the weekend, trips to Basel, Ronshan, and Weil am Rhein will take place to explore the famous Vitra Museum. The course is offered at an additional cost. Learning requires at least an average level of English.
  • Fashion and textile design: students study the process of designing clothes, creating their own collection, including sketch designs, fabric selection and design. Branding, marketing, identity, visual perception, colour psychology, and anticipation of trends are also being studied. School excursions include a visit to the textile and printing factory in Como and the Costume Museum in the Palazzo Morando in Milan. Learning requires at least an average level of English.
  • Italian cuisine. Children will learn how to cook real Italian food! They will select ingredients in Italian markets, travel to Italian cheese and meat factories, practice knife handling skills and learn how to balance spices perfectly. Students will complete the course with extensive knowledge of the culinary culture of Italy, as well as recipes that can be used for many years.

Sport

ACCOMMODATION

The campus has 7 comfortable chalet residences. The rooms are designed for 2-3 people, fully furnished and equipped with the necessary equipment. Each room has a private bathroom. In addition, each residence is equipped with a small kitchen, a cosy living room for common relaxation, laundry.

Excursions

The travel program introduces students to the most beautiful and exciting destinations in Switzerland and Italy: from the Italian lakes and the Swiss Alps to the Mediterranean coast. Examples of excursions: hiking on Mount Jungfrau, drawing in Venice, climbing a glacier, a culinary tour of Rome. Children can do water activities: canoeing, rafting or kayaking.
