PROGRAM

9 year of study

The main emphasis is on the development of knowledge, skills that students will need in preparing for the GCSE exam.

GCSE

For two years, students have been preparing for the exam to obtain a certificate of secondary education. The program for obtaining a certificate of general secondary education. Required to study 7 subjects and 4 subjects of choice.

A-level

Upon reaching the age of 16, compulsory secondary education ends, after which the students continue their education under the A-level program. This is a two-year preparatory program for admission to higher education. Subjects for study are selected individually by each student, based on preferences and the selected university. In the first year of study (AS-level), 4-5 subjects are studied, and in the second year of study (A2), 3-4 subjects are studied.

Cambridge Pre-U

The program of preparation for admission to the university. Created by the Cambridge Center for International Examinations (CIE) as an alternative to the A-Level program. The course is continuous, the subjects do not change and exams are held only at the end of the second year of study. They study 3, maximum 4 subjects. Much attention is paid to independent learning, which makes it possible to better prepare students for successful studies at the university. Students also perform an "Independent Research Project" and prepare a portfolio for the course "Global Perspectives and Research".

BTEC

An alternative to the A-level program: a pre-university training course with maximum emphasis on the development of practical skills, the application of theoretical knowledge in real life.

ACCOMMODATION

Living in a residence, on the school grounds there are 15 houses, 9 for boys and 6 for girls. Each house has 50-60 students, as well as mentors who live here with their families, and for them it is the same house as for the students.

The houses have a dining room and kitchen. Each house is unique and inimitable, since a variety of children live in it, and each brings its own contribution to the atmosphere and spirit of the house. Competitions are held between the residences, which supports the team spirit among children.

SPORT

The school’s facilities make it possible for students to practice almost any kind of sport. The school is convinced that for the full development of the child, good physical preparation is necessary. Here is an incomplete list of sports that can be practiced at school: rugby, rowing, rock climbing, soccer, hockey, tennis, ping pong, cricket, athletics. Experienced trainers help students achieve significant success in sports and win local and national competitions.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES

In addition to sports, students can engage in 40 interest clubs: a culinary club, a chess club, a music club, a poetic society, a debate club, a science club, a literary club, a club of history buffs, a geography club, a society of history and culture of antiquity, Spanish, German, French and Italian, a rock-climbing club, a diving club and much more.

IMPRESSIONS FROM A SCHOOL VISIT

Маrina GolovninaМаrina Golovnina

Uppingham is my favourite school!

The campus is very large, very beautiful. 795 students and all but 9 in full board. As registrar said: full board means FULL board! Mostly British here. Do not allow more than one representative of nationality in the age group. For example, in the house for boys where I had lunch, there was not a single Russian.

Admission is possible at 13, less often at 14, very difficult at 16 years. It was very strictly said: "the best thing you can do is to submit an application on time, as expected, namely in 2 years, that is, in 11 years." It is in year 7 that they do a pre-test for admission in year 9. In other cases, you will have to take UKISETat the British Council or their common entrance exam (this is about 8 exams).

A superb combination of antiquity (founded in 1584, beautiful buildings of the 16th century, tower, chapel) and modern buildings, very spacious, bright. They are very proud that in 1800 they were the first to introduce music education in the general schedule for all children. 24 different music groups, including a very strong school choir. More than 600 lessons per week. 60 coming and 9 regular music teachers. At a very high level (concerts in the country and abroad). A very beautiful, spacious, opened in 2014 scientific block with 17 laboratories.

All children eat in their homes. There is no common dining room. As they said, this allows them to communicate closely with the tutors who come and have lunch with the children every day, and feel truly at home. Breakfast is relaxed, girls can go out in pyjamas. Lunch is formal.

I attended a dinner at the boys. This is a whole ceremony. A few minutes before lunch, all the tutors of the house came to the housemaster room, he suggested they drink some wine. Then the attendant came and said that the boys were ready to eat. Everyone went down to the dining room, where the guys stood around their tables. Housemaster recited a quick prayer and everyone sat down. The food is served. There is no distribution line. Eat begin only after the elder. Finish when everyone has finished. We got up at the same time and dispersed. There is such a person - Monday guest - this is one of the adults, for example, a visitor, such as myself, who sits at 1 of the tables and communicates with the guys. This is an opportunity for them to learn to have a casual conversation, i.e. small talk, an important skill for living in society.

A school tour was made for me by a girl: very relaxed, confident, open. She said that most of all at school, she likes the opportunity to study and enjoy all the possibilities - sports, art, friends! The boys at dinner were also very confident, laughing. Relations with teachers are good, there is not much distance, they joked with each other a lot, but they turned to the teacher "sir"!
