Shrewsbury School is a boarding school for co-education of boys and girls, founded by Edward VI in 1552 on the basis of the Royal Charter. The current very beautiful, spacious campus, into which the school moved in 1882, is located high above the Severn River, in the city of Shrewsbury, Shropshire.

The city is 14.5 km from the border with Wales. Located on the observation deck directly above the riverbank, the Shrewsbury school is a ten-minute walk from the city centre. Its windows offer a beautiful view of the park, which hosts a Shrewsbury flower show every August, the longest flower show in the world.

Shrewsbury has over 660 historical sites, some of which date back to the Tudor era. These include the Norman Abbey dating from 1083, the medieval castle dating from 1074, and the 16th-century Old Market Hall, which now houses a movie theatre and cafe.

Shrewsbury has been named twice in the past two years among the 10 happiest places to live in the UK, and has the status of the “Purple Flag” to ensure the safety of the city. The countryside around Shrewsbury is one of the most beautiful in the country.

The school has about 800 students.

Program

GCSE

A two-year program for obtaining a certificate of general secondary education. Required to study 6 subjects, 4 subjects are studied by choice.

After the GCSE exams, students and parents can discuss subject selection for the Sixth Form with the faculty.

During Year 11, all students will receive preliminary guidance on career guidance using ISCO tests so that the subjects they choose for their AS- and A-Levels courses reflect their interests, abilities, and their future accordingly.

A-level

A two-year university preparatory program. Students choose 4 or 5 subjects for in-depth study.

Recommendations for employment and for admission to institutions of additional education (universities, etc.) are constantly available for students and parents.

Each student chooses a tutor for the Sixth Form, who will advise him on the choice of the university, as well as provide support in academic and everyday affairs.

The school has an EAL department (English as an additional language) for foreign students. Pupils for whom English is not their first language can receive additional English language instruction.

Accommodation

Shrewsbury has 13 houses: 9 for boys and 4 for girls. Each house is unique and incredibly proud of its heritage. There are competitions between houses, mainly in sports, as well as, for example, in debates and speeches.

In addition to their Housemaster or Housemistress (house managers), each student has a personal tutor. A key feature of the high school tutoring system (16-18 years old) in Shrewsbury is that each student chooses his own tutor.

Sport

The school has a large selection of different sports. In addition to football and cross-country running, the school strives for national success in cricket and rowing, as well as in rugby, netball, hockey, lacrosse, swimming, fencing, basketball and athletics.

Girls are engaged in traditional sports - hockey, netball, lacrosse; and also compete on equal terms with children in traditional sports for boys - football, rowing, cricket and cross-country.

Shrewsbury offers a wide range of sporting opportunities, from sports to maintain a healthy lifestyle to sports to win regionally or nationally.

The school has an impressive history in competitive sports, which goes far into the past. Pupils were central to the development of cross-country running in the Royal Hunt at Shrewsbury School (RSSH) format, the oldest running club in the world.

Shrewsbury school is strong in football. The school has 19 football teams that play matches against other schools. The school won several times in the League of Independent Schools and the Shropshire School Cup.

The football history of the Shrewsbury Club dates back to the origins of sports. Residents of Shrewsbury played a prominent role in meetings held to write the rules of the game in the mid-19th century (the world's oldest copy of the Football Rules is in the school library).

Many of the school's early football players achieved international status and recognition, even before the game became professional. Previously, Shrewsbury natives often won the Arthur Dunn Cup, including the first, fiftieth, and centennial finals.

Shrewsbury school is one of the best sports schools in the country, as evidenced by the quality of facilities, trainers and the level of achievement. Many of the students used Shrewsbury as a platform to transition into the world of professional sports, including internationally. Success in cricket, in particular, is unparalleled: over the past 11 years: 13 students have entered the professional game.

Additional classes

In addition to a variety of outdoor activities, sports, music and theatre events, Shrewsbury also has a number of clubs and societies that give students the opportunity to defend their interests or discover completely new ones. In addition, most academic departments have their own societies, and outstanding scholars who are leaders in their field and come to Shrewsbury with pleasure often meet at their meetings. The geographic association is one such example.

Examples of clubs: archery, society of art and photography, society, beekeeping, board games club, canoe and kayak club, Chinese society, Christian forum, programming club, comedy club, food preparation club, craft and textile club, Darwin society, discussion club, drama club, French society, mathematics club, Pilates, quiz society, award of the Duke of Edinburgh, cadet corps.

Music

Each student of the school can enjoy some form of music - choral, orchestral, jazz, rock or pop music. The school seeks to give as many students as possible the opportunity to participate in a rich musical life.

There are several groups for those who want to sing, an annual singing contest and the opportunity to listen to participate in one of the school’s musical theatre productions are held.

In addition, students can also create their own groups and rehearse using the excellent conditions of the Music School.

Students can learn to play all orchestral instruments, as well as percussion, piano, organ, guitar (classical, electric and jazz), jazz piano, harp and bagpipes.

Theatre

The theatre is an important part of the extracurricular program at Shrewsbury school. From the very beginning, students are encouraged to take part in various theatre projects, including events designed and managed by the students themselves. In addition to small plays, every year at the school level there are 4 main performances.

Shrewsbury school is proud of the high standard of its productions. Students are given the opportunity to perform at professional venues at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, the Royal Opera House and the Royal College of Music.
