Why it is not recommended to live with a host family
- Culture shock is stronger than from living in a residence or hotel, because... the family is often at a lower social level than the visiting student.
- There is a collapse of illusions: no one meets you with a set table, no one takes you to the sights, no one has intimate conversations – usually a student is treated simply as a lodger.
- The house may be dirty, smoky, and the dog may be allowed to sleep on the beds, including yours.
- The wardrobe in your room may be filled with household items.
- The family can eat fast food or Indian food or some other food that you don't like, but no one will change the menu for you.
- The student adapts to the existing way of life, not the family to the student.
- Sometimes you are not allowed to use a washing machine, and you have to take your clothes to a public laundry.
- Children under 18 are not given a key to the front door.
- They may give you a key, but losing it can cost you a fortune if the key was part of an expensive alarm system.
- Children under 18 may not be allowed to leave the house after dinner, and they will be very bored within 4 walls while their owners watch TV.
- Hosts may encounter a student who is drunk.
- The family makes sure that the student does not steal anything.
- The family does not accompany you to the airport and does not wave a handkerchief: the student himself looks for the check-in counter.
- Shower use may be limited.
- Compliance with sanitary standards by host families is not monitored by anyone.
- Schools rarely check families for law-abiding behavior and mental state!
