Success story of Yegor Potekin
A SIMPLE SIBERIAN GUY BECOME A DOCTOR IN THE USA
At the age of 13, Yegor Potekin went to Salisbury English as part of a group of children to study English. This trip, according to Yegor and his parents, became a detonator. A few more trips like this - and Yegor can no longer imagine himself without English, improving it day by day.
In high school, he became interested in medicine: this field seemed the most mysterious and fascinating of the work areas offered by school career guidance.
Egor enters the Krasnoyarsk Medical Institute and makes the bold decision to take the American exams. He scours the entire Internet, buys American textbooks, and begins to gnaw on the granite of science. The whole process took several years. The three USMLE exams take place in 3 stages, each lasting 8-9 hours. At the entrance there is a metal detector and a search of pockets, carbon fibers, rolling up sleeves and trousers. There is a camera above each person taking the exam. It won't be possible to write it off. All answers are only in electronic form.
On average, for a Russian, the first exam takes a year of daily preparation, 8-12 hours a day. The theory, medical science, so to speak, is being tested. To prepare for the second - 6-9 months in promeric centers anywhere in the world + 4 weeks in the USA. It takes place in two stages: practical medical knowledge, and then a staged reception of a patient-actor: communication skills and language level are tested. The third stage will be completed in 7 months.
Then you start knocking on clinics. If they like your application, they invite you to an interview: only in person, no Skype.
Egor was accepted to a hospital in Danbury, which has close ties to Yale University, where the young doctor will work for several months in the 2nd and 3rd years of his internship. Doctors from Yale give lectures here.
Resident doctors like Egor receive a stipend from $40 to $70,000 per year. For the first year, a two-room apartment is also paid for.
Egor now works as a therapist, which in the USA is the basis for further specialization. Egor is interested in resuscitation, sleep medicine (the intersection of cardiology, neurology and pulmonology) and geriatrics (medicine for the elderly).
Egor works 12 hours a day (up to 79 hours a week), but is delighted with the availability of research and medicines, comfort for patients and excellent working conditions. His hospital has a science speaker, and doctors are given the opportunity to do research and speak at conferences. He says everyone around is positive and kind. “Otherwise you’ll drown in a bad mood.” A dog comes into the hospital and is cuddled by doctors and patients to calm down. We don't allow people in.
This is truly a parable about how everything is possible! If you put your mind to it you can accomplish absolutely anything.
