Review of studying at Clifton College, Marina Nemirovskaya
Our daughter Asya studied at Clifton College from 2017 to 2019 under program A -level. At first she studied 4 subjects – mathematics, business, geography, French, but after the first semester she was asked to give up one subject, and she refused French. Although she studied it for 10 years, and it was a pity to quit, the school (thank them very much) suggested that in order to practice the language, go to a conversation club and meet once a week just with a teacher to maintain the level of knowledge.
Teachers – this is a separate ode. Very competent, interesting, with a non-standard approach to the learning process. We are always ready to meet either after class or right during recess and answer all the student’s questions. Some classes took place in the classrooms of the University of Bristol. As part of geography lessons, we traveled around Great Britain once a month, studying the landscape, taking samples of soil, water, etc.
What a wonderful sports program there is. Every 3 months you can change your sport. This includes swimming, tennis, fitness, rugby, football, running, dancing, etc. Group, individual - as you like.
The program at the school is very rich. And this is not only academic education - it is also upbringing, which we so lack at the present time. After testing with a psychologist, the children were asked to choose the social work they would like. This could include working with animals at a zoo nearby, caring for the elderly, distributing food to the poor, helping at a public school, and a number of other activities.
I’ll give you an example of how a school psychologist works. Asya is the eldest of three children in our family. And she always says that children tire her. She was recommended to go to a state junior school to be a teacher's assistant once a week. She, of course, could refuse. But since she really loves challenges and overcoming herself, she agreed. And imagine our surprise when this turned out to be the best job for her. She couldn't wait for Monday and hurried to these kids with new ideas, a flurry of emotions and joyful anticipation.
The next year she was offered to be the editor of the school newspaper: a huge selection of diverse extracurricular activities. And how much creativity they have! Competitions are constantly held among houses. Each house must submit a performance for a festival or music competition, theater production or dance battle. Each house is allocated an amount for costumes, props, etc. The children are excited and delighted. Rehearsals, scripts… And they do all this themselves, together, which greatly unites and develops.
Some events are constantly happening at school: a race for the entire college in support of cancer patients, a walk in honor of the heroes of the First World War, and much more. Both teachers and children take part in everything together.
Clifton – the most charming little village. It is considered an area of Bristol, where the university is located, and at the same time a separate locality. There are many cozy and atmospheric cafes there. Older kids can go out into the city twice a week, which is very cool.
The accommodation is very comfortable, the residences are well equipped with everything you need. In the house where my daughter lived, it was possible to cook. So those who love to cook enjoyed pampering themselves and their friends.
According to my daughter, the food is varied and tasty. Nowadays there are many vegetarians among young people, and vegan dishes, as well as diets (gluten-free, lactose-free…) are also always available. There was always fruit, milk, toast, and jam in the house. Nutrition is well looked after. There have been cases where girls who are very keen on losing weight and lose control over it are assigned staff to ensure that the child eats properly.
The school has a psychologist and a mutual aid system among children studying psychology - a support group that helps solve many issues. Medicine is always an exciting time. Over the course of 2 years, we contacted an ENT specialist and a traumatologist twice. First, the child goes to the first aid station, where there is always a nurse. She looks and decides whether additional specialist advice is needed. In our case, everything was on time and correct.
Clifton College – amazing place. My review could have been longer because my close relationship with my daughter allowed us to know about everything that was happening. She had a very good time at school, and she always wanted to share emotions, new skills, events, etc.
Unlimited gratitude both from the lips of children and from the lips of parents! The daughter received excellent knowledge, as a result she received excellent grades A*, A, B and an offer of a place from the university of her dreams.
