Wellington School dates back to 1837 as a private school on the very outskirts of the city in a building still known as the School Building.

Since 1902, the government begins to provide donations (grants) to schools that were ready to offer free places for local boys. Under the leadership of George Corner, who was the principal of the school for 39 years, a period of rapid development of the school began in 1899, especially in the field of construction

After the cancellation of the Assistance Program, the school introduced its own Academic Grant Program, which allowed to open an additional 20 free places annually.

The school has about 800 students.

KEY FACTORS

  • The school introduces students in the fifth and sixth grades with various opportunities for further development, offering to choose their calling. Each fifth-grade student is interviewed, or a special test or questionnaire developed by the School itself is offered.
  • Subsequent admission to a higher education institution is managed by the principal and the head teacher. To do this, additional classes are held at which students are introduced to the rules of admission and talk separately with each one so that the student makes every effort to work in exactly the area that interests him most.

EQUIPMENT

Over the past few years, very large investments have been made in construction. Now on the territory of Wellington School there is a practical centre, special classrooms for drawing, 12 laboratories equipped with the latest technology, specially built classes for mathematics, modern linguistics and much more. Pupils and teachers can now really enjoy classes in spacious, bright classrooms.

The library is the intellectual centre of the school, and therefore it is located right in the centre of the Duke Building. Bright and spacious, designed for the simultaneous lesson of about 80 students and with a fund of more than 15,000 books, it is a valuable source for increasing the level of students' knowledge. The library also features periodicals and many different magazines. The library is computerized and the search for the necessary literature is a very easy and fast process.

PROGRAM

By its own decision, the school does not fully adhere to the National Curriculum, but within the departments the curriculum is very closely related to the requirements of the program. The school observes its development with great interest, and the latest changes made it bring the National Curriculum closer to the existing practice in the school.

Pupils at the school can choose any combination of subjects from the available ones, and school staff makes a schedule according to their choice.

GCSE

The program for obtaining a certificate of general secondary education. Required to study 7 subjects and 4 subjects of choice.

A-level

A two-year university preparatory program. Pupils choose 4 or 5 subjects. Each subject is studied 5 hours a week.

ACCOMMODATION

Wellington School students live in 4 residences on the school grounds. Each residence has approximately 40 children. Boys and girls live in different houses. A pleasant family atmosphere and supervision 24 hours a day contribute to the development of the child both academically and socially. Students in grades 11-13 live in double rooms. Primary children are accommodated in rooms for 3-5 people. Amenities on the floor in sufficient quantities. The residences were renovated in 2014. Each residence has a kitchen where you can have a meal and chat with friends over a cup of tea, as well as a living room with a TV and board games.

SPORT

A rich and diverse extracurricular life at school contributes to the full development of the child. All children are involved in a particular sport, and about 60% participate in competitions and defend the honour of the school at various levels. Hockey, fencing, rugby, tennis, cricket, netball, swimming - this is an incomplete list of all the sports that are in the school.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES

The school encourages students to participate in various activities. Starting in the fourth year, students are faced with a choice of where to enter. It is proposed to engage in activities that will benefit society.

The full list of clubs and circles is quite extensive, we have everything: from a brass band to a class in yoga classes - there is always plenty to choose from. The school drama circle includes a large number of students who perform not only inside the school, but also outside it.

Music permeates all areas of school life: from singing the hymn and participating in the morning church choir to highly professional public performances. More than 250 students take vocal lessons or classes on musical instruments.
