New Hall School is a boarding school for boys and girls. Conveniently located on the outskirts of Chelmsford, Essex, just a 30-minute train ride from London and close to all major London airports.

New Hall School was founded in 1642 and is one of the oldest schools in the UK.

The school has a very successful learning model - the “Dimond model”, where children study in co-educational classes up to 11 years old and then in high school (16-18 years old). And from 11 to 16 years, boys and girls study separately.

The main advantages of the “Diamond Model” and five-year separate training are the ability to more sensitively and professionally adapt the care of students and academic education to the needs of young people experiencing physical, emotional and social upheavals of adolescence. Young teens are relieved of negative peer pressure and the need to study in mixed classes. Girls and boys follow the same academic program and do not perceive school subjects stereotypically: as more suitable for girls or for boys.

About 1000 students are enrolled in the school.

Director (stand 2023)

Katherine Jeffrey, Education - University of Oxford, Master of Arts. Has a certificate of postgraduate education, a bachelor's degree in theology. The holder of the national professional qualifications of the head.

Key factors

  • Academically strong school.
  • New Hall School entered the top 50 UK boarding schools based on A-Level exams.
  • A record number of students then get a place in the leading London firms.
  • New Hall encourages capable students to apply to Oxford or Cambridge. The school has a good track record of students who have received places at Oxbridge in a wide range of subjects, including art, science, humanities and languages.
  • Experienced and dedicated employees strive to bring out the best in every child.

Equipment

The school has excellent sports equipment: a sports track, an illuminated Astroturf playground, a fitness room, 10 floodlit tennis and non-ball courts, cricket and rugby courts and a 25-meter indoor pool.

Also, there is: a library, art rooms, a computer centre and a performing arts centre.

Program

The New Hall curriculum is distinguished by its breadth and academic rigor. The creative approach and well-balanced curriculum is adapted to the needs of students.

New Hall provides the best: the benefits of coeducation together with the benefits of educating girls and boys separately (11-16 years old). The provision of separate education in the early years of education allows students to become more confident in themselves, receiving an education specially designed and considering the different teaching methods of boys and girls.

Support from faculty and subject matter experts as part of a structured university preparation program allows New Hall students to apply for courses that are best suited to their strengths and aspirations, and almost all of them are accommodated in their chosen institution. New Hall students continue their studies at various universities, including the Oxbridge and Russell Group, at the prestigious Art Foundation courses, as well as in many foreign universities.

GCSE

A two-year program for obtaining a certificate of general secondary education. Required to study 6 subjects, 4 subjects are studied by choice.

At the age of 14-15, the main focus is on preparing for the GCSE exams. We study 4-5 compulsory subjects (English, mathematics, science and 1-2 modern languages to choose from) and 3 elective subjects (Latin and Greek, geography, history, the foundations of religion, art, theatre, music, technology and design)

A-level

A two-year university preparatory program. Students choose 4 or 5 subjects for in-depth study.

High school (16-18 years) has a number of features:

  • Training by A-Level specialists with a more adult learning style.
  • Dedicated study rooms and a relaxation room at the Thomas More Centre.
  • An expanded range of A-Level items.
  • Omega is a specialized program for preparing for admission to Oxford and Cambridge.
  • A special program for preparing for university enrolment, including applications for courses in medicine and law.
  • Professional career program and more

Students study three A-Level subjects (or four if they want to study advanced mathematics), which will be completed at the end of two years of study.

The school strives to prepare students not only for the university, but also for life outside it. The opportunities here are wonderful; it is this experience that will help distinguish the application for university admission and help shape the future of students.

ACCOMMODATION

Accommodation in a residence on the school grounds. The infrastructure in every home is exceptional. Most full-board students live in 1-bed rooms. All rooms are well equipped with modern furniture, internet access, a personal desk and a message board.

SPORT

Under the guidance of experienced coaches, including former international athletes, New Hall School combines first-class training with those with special sports talents with a “sport for all” approach.

Sports at school: rugby, hockey, netball, cricket, swimming, athletics, golf, skiing and tennis. Athletes compete at local, national, and international levels.

Additional classes

Additional activities are provided for those students who are especially capable or talented, whether they are academic subjects, sports, performing and creative arts, to ensure the full disclosure of their potential.

Additional classes include lessons and exams at LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Drama). New Hall students successfully pass more than 250 LAMDA exams each year, with a significant share awarded for merit or distinction.

The discussion club meets once a week and competes with the English Union, as well as in the Oxford and Cambridge Union competitions. Legal debates, Olympiads in mathematics and physics are held, which have outstanding results.

Many skills acquired in the course of such work will be useful in learning: the ability to find solutions to problems, work in a team and speak to an audience.
