Haileybury School

Haileybury Boarding School was founded in 1862. The school is located near London, in the countryside on a vast territory. Ancient buildings make up a unique architectural ensemble.

The school owns over 500 acres of gardens, meadows, forests and sports fields. The famous oak grove grows here, the age of some trees reaches 400 years. The territory of the school is recognized as one of the most beautiful in the UK.

EQUIPMENT

The school has excellent sports equipment: football fields, cricket and rugby fields (in 2015, the school hosted the world rugby championship on its territory). There is a fully equipped sports complex with a sports and gymnasium, two squash courts with a glass wall, bowling, closed cricket fields, a new climbing wall and a 25-meter pool (the pool design was awarded a national award). In 2008, a tennis centre was opened with 4 indoor and 4 outdoor courts.

The school has a completely new music department with instruments, including the Steinway piano and Klais organ. Here you can find rehearsal rooms, a recording studio, and Mac computers with music processing software.

The school’s art department is well equipped for creative work: an art library, computers with Adobe software, a ceramic class with two large furnaces for firing products, two large printing presses, and classes for painting and drawing.

GCSE

The program for obtaining a certificate of general secondary education. 6 subjects are required for study, 3 subjects are studied by choice.

A-level

A two-year university preparatory program. Students choose 4 or 5 subjects for in-depth study.

International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB)

A program recognized by universities around the world. 6 subjects are studied: 3 at the advanced level and 3 at the standard level. In addition to this, students write an extended essay, take the course “Theory of Knowledge” (practical philosophy) and the course CAS (“Creativity, Activity and Mutual Assistance”).

ACCOMMODATION

Living in a residence on the school grounds in one of 13 houses. Boys and girls live separately, each house accommodates up to 70 people. A safe and caring atmosphere has been created here: a real “home away from home”. Each building has its own individual character. The houses are equipped with everything necessary for a comfortable stay: from the kitchen to the cosy common living rooms. Children can use the laundry facilities. Some houses have their own washing machines.

SPORT

Sport is central to school life. This is a way to increase your confidence and perseverance through teamwork, learn more about others, learn to make decisions in situations of pressure. All this, as a result, has a good effect on academic performance. Many students after graduation begin a professional sports career.

Key sports: cricket, football, netball, rugby, hockey, tennis, lacrosse. The school also offers: squash, running, athletics, golf, rowing, sailing, water polo, mountain biking, go-karting, rock climbing, badminton, archery, dancing, aerobics, Pilates.

A special program is held for talented athletes. It will help students achieve their sporting goals, realize their opportunities to the maximum and participate in competitions at the regional and national levels. The program is conducted in key school sports. Classes are taught by professional trainers - international level athletes.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES

The school has a lot of interest clubs: a debate club, a model of the United Nations, a club of oratory, an environmental group, a journalism club, a photo club, a charity committee, a club of young businessmen, and many others.

The importance is given to music. The school provides students with many opportunities for performances, both solo and as part of ensembles, orchestras and groups. School concerts are very popular. Students can take individual lessons to learn how to play an instrument or vocals. There are trips to the opera and concerts.

School theatre offers students the opportunity to express themselves. Children develop presentation skills, work on voice production and learn to interact with the audience. In addition to playing on stage, you can take part in organizing performances: staging light and sound, creating makeup and costumes.

The art school is open to all comers every evening 6 days a week. Pupils can engage in creativity in any form interesting to them: painting, ceramics, drawing, sculpture, photography, computer art. At the end of each academic year, a grandiose exhibition of students' works is held, and a major art competition is held every two years.

Such an inscription hangs on a huge poster in one of the residences for boys at Haileybury School. A huge green campus lies 20 miles from London. And it was she who graduated from the famous author of Mowgli. Architecture of extraordinary beauty. Smiles of teachers and children. Great living conditions.

Accompanying me, Peter jokes: single rooms for students in grade 12 are not large enough to fit into the category of British prison cells. "Well, in the 13th grade, of course, more!" I inform him that I looked at more than 100 schools, and he lives in truly luxurious conditions.

Hailybury School is one of the best in the country. So, one of the best in the world. In my experienced opinion, it is ideal: food, accommodation, architectural ensemble, teaching staff, exam results, equipment and smiles of children, atmosphere. Almost too good to be true!

Peter (Russian)  is also perfect. Without exaggeration. A handsome, slender young man in an impeccable suit with impeccable English and no less beautiful Russian, a very smart and interesting conversationalist. This is the elite of the world, they rule countries and corporations. Parents live between London and Zurich, and only 3 years he studied in Moscow, but this made it possible to compare the two systems. Peter claims that healthy competition reigns in this school. “Even the laziest students show brilliant results for some reason. There are no blenders here, as in Moscow. Such an environment motivates.”

He praises teachers many times and passionately - they all graduated from Oxford Cambridge, or they have a diploma with honours from another university - but this is an excemption! He says they are enraged by only one thing: they ask in graduation classes immeasurably, not realizing that they are not alone! 2 hours are allotted for homework, and if you put the whole homework in a heap, you get 5 hours of work, so you have to sit all weekend. If you have a problem, says Peter, "there are 50 people you can turn to."

This guy originally entered the famous Harrow, where the children of the powerful of this world traditionally study, but did not study there: he was not impressed by the level of academic indicators. And the fact that they were met not by the director of the selection committee, but by the director of the school fund, who is responsible for additional donations, was especially disappointing. Apparently, his father was googled beforehand. A child from a high-ranking family, Peter is amazingly easy to communicate. Like a real crown prince :) Previously, Peter was in the junior swimming team of Russia. He said, counted the distances covered in all his training for a lifetime. It turned out that he swam around the Earth 5 times.

The school has 13 tennis courts, including 3 indoor, 8 squash courts, a large gym, a gym, a 25 m swimming pool with 6 tracks, the campus covers approximately 200 hectares, sports fields allow rugby players to be divided into several teams. Some of the guys from the school play for the most famous in the UK club Saracens. In tennis - also numerous victories. This is a very sporty school.

Here is just a great music school and super cool theatre art. The director of the admissions committee said that the set for 2017 is over, but she will find a place for a talented young musician-orchestra musician with good English ...

High-ranking Italian families have chosen this school as their stronghold. There are very few Russians and Chinese. Admission begins at age 11, and then, of course, it’s not difficult to do, you just need to be smart.

Michelle, director of the admissions committee, tells me that he receives 20-30 requests from agencies around the world asking for cooperation. But almost everyone is denied. However, they invited me to come, I understood: we are on the same wavelength. It is important for them that the agency think about the needs of each specific child, and not pursue only for profit.

We have lunch in a beautiful dining room with oak panels, the school buffet will compete with any 4-star hotel. Michelle says, sometimes foreign parents think that, having learned about this or that school, they will be able to take part in it themselves, but stumble halfway, not understanding the requirements, criteria, details of the British educational system; what the school expects from them and how to build interaction with it. Therefore, Michelle is trying to redirect such parents to trusted agencies: this saves everyone a lot of time.

He says that sometimes Russian or Chinese parents are unhappy if their children were unable to do: they demand that she call the boss. “What if I’m the boss myself?” Exclaims Michelle and nods her head condemningly. The school tries not to take children from the East: they are very cheeky, do not respect female teachers and are prone to fights. Michelle asks me to find her good Russian girls: according to her observations, the girls of our country are hardworking, unlike the guys ... We will look!

Verdict: perfect school.
