Dean Close School was founded in 1886 and is located on 20 hectares of a picturesque park area in the heart of Cheltenham, in the south-west of England. This resort city is known as the architectural and cultural centre of Great Britain. The school is an hour and a half drive from London.

EQUIPMENT

The school has excellent classrooms, laboratories, libraries, a theatre, art and music school. It has its own professional theatre with 550 seats, an open-air amphitheatre. The school has a fully equipped medical centre.

Sports equipment includes a £ 3 million gym with an aerobics room, a dance studio, a fitness room and an indoor sports hall with equipment for badminton, basketball, indoor soccer, indoor hockey, netball, tennis, trampolining and volleyball. There are floodlit sports fields, over 20 tennis courts, a 25-meter indoor pool, two squash courts, an indoor shooting range and a climbing wall.

PROGRAM

High School (7-13 years old)

The main subjects are studied: 13 subjects. Teachers are always nearby if children need extra help. From the 6th year of schooling, students begin to study Latin, perform laboratory work in chemistry, physics, biology.

Senior School (13-18 years old)

The GCSE program provides an average of 10 subjects for which exams are taken at the end of the 11th year of study. 5 items are required. Other items are offered to choose from.

The two-year A-level course ends with final exams, the results of which are considered when entering the university. In order to study on the course, the student must pass at least 4 subjects of the GCSE exam for a grade of at least B (good) and 2 subjects for a grade of at least C (satisfactory). In the first year of study (AS), 4 subjects are studied, and in the second year of study (A2), 3 subjects are usually studied.

ACCOMMODATION AND FOOD

Accommodation in a cosy and comfortable residence. All houses have been recently renovated, now there are modern and comfortable rooms. Pupils feel at home. Each house has a living room with a TV and game consoles, table tennis and five-a-side football, a small kitchen and changing rooms with showers. In each residence there is a manager who provides 24-hour supervision of students. Boys and girls live separately.

Three meals a day in the school cafeteria. The food is nutritious and well balanced, there is always a choice of hot dishes, a variety of salads and a vegetarian menu.

SPORT

The school is proud of its sporting traditions, known throughout the country. Unrivalled sports equipment, combined with the work of qualified trainers, brought the school fame in the world of sports. The school has top-level trainers, many of whom have played or coached professionally or internationally.

Students are taught a balanced program of physical education, including individual and team classes, which are planned and evaluated by professional qualified trainers.

All students in high school play for the team in the main sports in each semester (rugby, hockey, netball, cricket, tennis). Other sports in the curriculum include aerobics, athletics, badminton, basketball, rock climbing, cross country, cycling, fitness training, golf, swimming, trampolining, volleyball and water polo.

Students can engage in sports at a professional level. They follow an individual regime, which is aimed at developing sports potential. An individual program supports and monitors the training, progression and performance of athletes.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES

Each student is encouraged and encouraged to try something new, because this is the only way to realize their potential. Interest clubs include: engineering, electronics, history, scuba diving, chess, photography, dancing, literature, debates, as well as science clubs.

Dean Close School is famous for its departments of music, art and theatre.

An art school is located on the territory of the school, where children can fully reveal their creative potential in the classroom of ceramics, design and technology, painting, photography, fine art (with a bias in contemporary art). Bo Bernard Gallery hosts exhibitions (both students and visitors) throughout the school year and even showed the work of Picasso and David Hockney. The school is regularly visited by famous artists with seminars and master classes.

The results of graduates are consistently high, many of them get places in the best art schools in the country, including Slade (University College London), Central Saint Martins, Chelsea School of Art and Bartlett School of Architecture (University College London).

Drama and theatre are culturally and academically important to the life of the school. Here they believe that they enrich students, allow themselves to prove themselves, and also entertain. They give students the opportunity to understand themselves, to question their own and alien world. The drama's reputation here is extremely high. Dean Close has a strong tradition of performing works by major playwrights and the best of contemporary playwrights.

Bacon Theatre is the main theatre facility, specially built for the school, with an assembly hall for 560 seats, with a huge stage and high-tech equipment. Some productions take place at the Tuckwell Theatre Studio and at an amphitheatre.

Every two years, the school organizes a major musical, which is the highlight of the season, involving high-level musicians and choreographers.

Pupils take part in the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, which provides unprecedented cultural and artistic opportunities for children.

Dean Close has a magnificent specially built music school, which houses a recording studio, a huge concert hall, music study rooms, as well as a well-equipped library. Every year there are 50 concerts. Each student can learn to play a musical instrument or engage in vocals. The school has its own symphony orchestra, choir and various musical groups.
