Medical course (Oxford Royale Academy)

Age: 13-15 years old, 16-18 years old

Dates, 2024: June 30 – July 13, July 14–27, July 28 – August 10.

A two-week course for children aimed at a future career in medicine. For younger students, this is an introduction to the practical and theoretical side of the profession. For older students - an excellent preparation for studying at the best British medical schools.

At the end of the course, students 13-15 years old:

• Learn the basics of anatomy and science underlying medicine.
• Receive practical medical skills.
• Be able to plan their further training in this area.
• Get an additional advantage over others when entering university.

At the end of the course, students 16-18 years old:

• Identify medical schools to which they would like to apply.
• Learn how to better prepare for admission, including by writing an effective application.
• Understand the structure of entrance exams and learn how to better prepare for them.
• Prepare for the BMAT exam.
• Learn about the UKCAT test.
• Take part in a test interview.

Oxford is a city that combines strikingly beautiful architecture with a bustling modern centre with superb shops, restaurants and cafes. The city is steeped in history and saturated with academic spirit, because there are many colleges at Oxford University, some of them are almost 800 years old!

PROGRAM

For children 13-15 years old

Under the guidance of experienced Oxford Royale teachers, students will be engaged in a theoretical study of human anatomy and related topics. The program also includes hands-on interactive lessons to help develop key competencies for your future research, such as presentation and interpersonal skills.

Thanks to practical and theoretical acquaintance with the complex and exciting world of medicine, children will learn the basics of medical science and will be able to assess whether they are suitable for work in this area.

The program consists of three areas:

• Understanding what a career in medicine involves.
• Practical skills such as catheterization, injection and reflex testing.
• Laboratory skills.

For children 16-18 years old

“Curing the Future” exposes you to numerous careers in medicine and provides unique insight into how you can navigate the medical school application process.

The course program combines theoretical training with the aim of increasing medical knowledge and the study of practical medical methods, as well as assistance in preparing for admission to medical school. Children will learn about top universities for studying medicine, including St. Andrews, Oxford and Cambridge.

Such training is important for young people. Universities want to see trained applicants who have been doing research outside the school, and also understand the practical realities of what a career in medicine involves. The course will be an invaluable start before studying medicine at the university, and will also provide practical experience that the children will be able to talk about in their statement and in the interview.

• Explore the fields of biology, genetics, neuroscience, genomics, emergency medicine, and human anatomy.
• Investigate both the practice of medicine and biomedical research through speakers and visits to university biomedical labs, simulation centres, and research facilities.
• Gain practical insight into a career as a Surgeon, Doctor, Nurse, or Allied Health Professional and identify how to navigate the medical school application process.

ACCOMMODATION

Students live on the campuses of Oxford University: Yarnton Manor, Balliol College, Lady Margaret Hall; at Clare College (B) and St Catharine's College, University of Cambridge, and St Andrews University of Scotland. Accommodation in single and double rooms. Bathrooms are typically shared by students of the same gender, although private baths are available in some cases. Accommodation is standard accommodation for university students, so course participants will be able to feel the life of a real Oxford student.

SPORT

Fencing, Zumba, archery, tennis, rounders, football, basketball, softball, cricket, table tennis, cricket, salsa.

ENTERTAINMENT ACTIVITIES

In the evenings, a special team organizes entertainment events: quizzes, watching movies, karaoke and talent shows! During the course, 2 large theme parties take place: one in the middle of the course, the second is a grand graduation evening. Examples of party themes: Narnia, Alice in Wonderland, James Bond, circus and many others.

EXCURSIONS

• Visits to museums that are within walking distance of campuses: Oxford University Museum of Natural History, Fitzwilliam Museum of Arts and History, Scott Polar Research Institute, Sedgwick Museum of Earth Sciences and many others.
• City tours. One of the best ways to see the city is with a walking tour led by an expert on culture and history. Students will have the opportunity to get acquainted with the sights and history of the city and the university, tours are complemented by funny jokes about the life of Oxford. In addition to the colleges where students will live, they will also be able to visit other beautiful historical colleges and enjoy their stunning architecture and history.
